• Merrimac Ferry - Merrimac, Wisconsin

      Roadtrip Attraction
The only remaining free ferry in Wisconsin. The current boat, The Colsac III, can move up to 15 cars at a time across the Wisconsin River in 7 minutes. The ferry service started in 1844 as the primary transportation route from Madison to Baraboo. It is now a popular tourist attraction. Despite the out-of-the-way location, 300,000 cars a year use the ferry for a nostalgic and scenic river crossing.

      If you go:
The ferry operates 24 hours a day seasonally (typically April through November.) Signs near exits from I-90/94 and US-12 warn drivers if the ferry is closed. Expect a wait if crossing on a summer weekend.
