Annapolis, Maryland is home of the U.S. Naval Academy which was established here in 1845. Guided tours are available to the public. An especially impressive time to come is Commissioning Week (during May), when graduating cadets are transformed into fleet officers with much pomp and circumstance. The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft. The Naval Academy gives young men and women the up-to-date academic and professional training needed to be effective naval and marine officers in their assignments after graduation.
