• Town of Taos Hosts Essay & Photo Contest

      Cash Prizes for Top Three Essays and Top Three Photos

      Taos, New Mexico - The Taos News and the Town of Taos, in keeping with the traveler 2011 education theme, 'Be Transformed by the Land, Light & Legend of Taos,' are looking for people's unique stories and photos on how they were transformed by Taos.

      People can submit their essays and photos by April 15, 2011 and qualify to both be published and win cash prizes. Prizes will be awarded to the top three essays and top three photos.

      The submission deadline for the essay and photo contest entries is Friday, April 15, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. Mailed entries must be postmarked by that date.

      Artists responsible for the winning (top 3) essays and photos will have their works printed in the 'Be Transformed by the Land, Light and Legend of Taos' special section of The Taos News to be published June 2, 2011 and on www.TaosSacredPlaces.com for ongoing traveler education.

      So if you've been to Taos, you live in Taos or you just plain love Taos . . . now is the time to share your experiences.

      Essays must answer the question: How have you been transformed by the land, light or legend of Taos? The rules for essay contest are:
      • Word limit is 500.
      • Poetry or short stories will not be accepted.
      • Essays must be original and must not have appeared in another publication, print or online.
      • Essays will be judged on the merits of the writing and not the subject. Members of The Taos News staff will judge the entries. Judges' decisions are final.
      • Entries must include the writer's name, address and phone number; anonymous entries and pseudonyms will not be accepted.
      • Handwritten entries will not be accepted.
      • Submit your entry by e-mail (preferred method) to editor@taosnews.com; put 'essay contest entry' in the subject line. You may also submit an essay by mailing it to Editor, The Taos News, P.O. Box 3737, Taos, NM. 87571; or drop it off at the newsroom, 226 Albright St., Taos.
      • By submitting an entry, writers grant permission that their piece and a photo of them may be published in the 'Be Transformed by the Land, Light and Legend of Taos' special section of The Taos News , on taosnews.com, taossacredplaces.com and other media. They also agree that their essay and image may be used in promotional advertising by The Taos News and the Town of Taos.
      • Employees of The Taos News, Sangre de Cristo Chronicle and The Santa Fe New Mexican, and their immediate family members are not eligible. Regular paid contributors to The Taos News are also not eligible.

      Photos must show how the land, light or legend of Taos is transforming. The rules for the photo contest are:
      • Limit is three photos per individual.
      • Photos may be black and white or color.
      • No pornography.
      • Printed copies of photos will not be accepted.
      • Photos must be original and must not have appeared in another publication, print or online.
      • Members of The Taos News staff will judge the photo entries. Decision by the judges is final.
      • Entries must include: the photo’s title; the photographer's name, address and phone number. Anonymous entries and pseudonyms will not be accepted.
      • By submitting an entry, photographers grant permission that their piece and photo may be published in the 'Be Transformed by the Land, Light and Legend of Taos' special section of The Taos News, on taosnews.com, taossacredplaces.com and other media. They also agree that their photo may be used in promotional advertising by The Taos News and the Town of Taos.
      • Submit your photo by e-mail to editor@taosnews.com; put "photo contest entry" in the subject line; include your contact information in the body of the e-mail. File size must be under 3 mg; use a jpeg or pdf format; photo size must be 5” wide and 200 DPI. Or submit photos on a disc using the same requirements as e-mail. You may mail the disc to Editor, The Taos News, P.O. Box 3737, Taos, NM, 87571; or drop the disc off at the newsroom, 226 Albright St., Taos.
