Birmingham was arguably the capital of the civil rights movement in the USA and the intersection of 16th Street North and 6th Avenue North was the epicenter. Accordingly, one corner of this intersection is now the site of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which features 58,000 square feet of archives, galleries, and event facilities. On another corner the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church still stands and operates. It was here that four young girls were killed when the church was bombed in 1963. These victims are memorialized by a plaque at the church, and by one of several sculptures across the street at Kelly Ingram Park, which was the site of historic demonstrations.
