This legendary little stretch of narrow alleyway, 70 feet long and about 15 feet high, has been photographed and alluded to frequently in pop culture. It's estimated that millions of pieces of chewed gum have been stuck on these walls over the decades. Nobody knows exactly when or why the tradition got started, but it is believed to have originated in the Fifties, and was definitely well established by 1970 or so. Look closely, and you'll see that some visitors have left gum in artistic or expressive arrangements. Others have attached pennies, slips of paper with messages or made other graffiti-like additions. A unique, evolving work of collaborative folk art.

      If you go:
The alley is accessible every day, 24 hours. While you're stopping to see it, explore the rest of the city as well. San Luis Obispo is colorful, vibrant and intriguing. This is also vaguely disgusting so be forewarned.
