The coast of Massachusetts is excellent whale watching territory, and Whale Watch Plymouth is an excellent way to see the whales and other marine life. Operated by Captain John's boats, which also offers fishing expeditions and other boat excursions, the whale watch is a cruise of about 4 hours that leaves Plymouth harbor and takes you out past Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod, far out away from any sight of land. But the water is still rather smooth, and you'll have a pleasant day spotting different species of whales, large fish and perhaps even a giant turtle. Onboard experts provide explanations of what you're seeing - you're guaranteed to learn a fascinating fact or two while you have a fun and memorable experience.

      If you go:
The boat tends to head directly toward the vicinity of marine life when spotted, so you might be well advised to stake out a good viewing spot near the front of the boat. Considering the length of the excursion, you might want to bring along some munchies, or some money to purchase food on board. There is a snack bar supplying burgers, pizza and even alcoholic beverages. But it accepts payment in cash only. Even in warmer weather, it's a good idea to bring a jacket or sweater along. And don't forget the sunscreen.
