While the story of Hugh Glass has probably been been exaggerated to the point of mythology, this trader/hunter/adventurer did exist and, in 1823, after being left for dead following a severe mauling by a grizzly bear, survived by crawling many miles to safety. His story has been told (and embellished) many times over the years, most recently in The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This stone monument, located at the end of a long, unpaved road, commemorates his life and marks the general location of the bear attack.

      If you go:
Time your visit towards the end of August and join in the Hugh Glass Rendezvous, an annual event that celebrates the Hugh Glass story through art, music, lectures, food and other fun programs, with many participants in period costume.
