• Ingalls Dugout , Plum Creek - Walnut Grove, Minnesota

Walnut Grove is famous for its Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and the pageant held every July to celebrate the period that the family lived in nearby. Just a short drive out of town is Plum Creek and the Ingalls Dugout Site, the location where, in 1874, Charles Ingalls created the family home. The depression in the ground is still visible and a number of the sites described in Laura's book "on the Banks of Plum Creek" can still be identified.

      If you go:
The site is on private land but the owners - the Gordon family - allow access. The site is open daylight hours from May to October and there is a charge of $5 per car - this is by the honour system so do make sure you have a cash.
