• Olana State Historic Site - Hudson, New York

      High on a hill overlooking the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, sits the magnificent home of Frederic Edwin Church, a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painting. The entire grounds with gardens and other buildings was designed to provide appealing landscapes to paint that were considered beautiful by romantic landscape painters in the area in the mid-19th century.

      If you go:
      The only way to see inside the house is to book one of the tours, which are available Tuesday through Sunday. Reservations are recommended. Admission to the grounds is free and open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, year round. Tours of the grounds are also available. Dogs are permitted on the grounds.
