• Savage River Check Station - Healy, Alaska

Private vehicles are not allowed on the Denali Park Road beyond mile 15, the Savage River Bridge. Use of the road beyond that point is restricted primarily to tour buses and shuttles, and vehicles with special permits, under certain special circumstances. The idea is to minimize human interaction with the park's wildlife.

      If you go:
No special pass or permit is required to drive to Savage River, and there is no fee. The road is paved the entire distance and is in excellent condition. There is a small (33 space) mixed-use campground two miles before the bridge, at mile 13, and there is limited free parking available near the bridge. The Savage River Loop Trail is a fairly easy two mile hike that follows the river valley. The more strenuous Savage Alpine Trail connects the area near the bridge with the area near the Campground.
