• Original In-N-Out Burger - Baldwin Park, California

In 1948, the very first In-N-Out Burger drive-in opened at this intersection, across the street from the present commemorative site. That original building was demolished a few years later when the freeway came through, but other locations had begun opening, and the In-N-Out empire was on its way to becoming a big hit. This painstakingly detailed replica has an informative attendant on site to tell you how the 10-foot square facility operated (the tiny bathroom, doubled as the business office) and point out the functions of the various pieces of vintage equipment. The washing machine out back was not used for laundry but for processing french fries. Children can have fun playing at the grill and pretending to cook the make-believe burgers provided. The building and grounds are also available for private functions. And note the crossed palm trees, a reference to one of the founder's favorite movies, It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

      If you go:
Open Thursday through Sunday from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. except for major holidays. At other times, you can get good photos through the fence.
