Established in the early 19th century as a busy river port town, Grand Gulf was all but destroyed during the second of the two major Civil War battles that took place here. Today it is a military monument with something for everyone: a museum, the remains of two forts, the Old Grand Gulf Cemetery, a collection of restored period buildings, a water mill, and a 75 ft observation tower offering a (fairly limited!) view of the Mississippi River, half a mile or so away.
If you go:
The park is open 7 days a week from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm except major holidays. There are facilities for RVs and tent campers including showers and laundry.
