Washington state's Long Beach offers 28 miles of white sand beaches and activities range from surfing to cycling, but it's perhaps most famous for kite flying. The ideal breezy conditions here attract kite flyers from all over the world, with tens of thousands gathering on the third full week of August to watch - and participate in - the annual Washington State International Kite Festival.

      If you go:
Make time to visit the World Kite Museum, a facility with something for everyone from enthusiasts to first time flyers. The museum is open daily from 11:00 to 5:00 (closed Wednesdays/Thursdays from October to March).
