• Whale Watching Tours - Friday Harbor, Washington

The inland waterways of the Salish Sea that surrounds the San Juan Islands are home to a number of pods of southern resident orcas and also sees transient orcas, gray whales, minke whales and humpback whales passing through. This makes this area one of the best whale watching spots in the world, with many different outfitters offering trips out of picturesque Friday Harbor, San Jan Island. Other operators offer day trips leaving from Seattle or Port Townsend.

      If you go:
The best time to see whales is from late May to mid October. Dress in layers: it can be as much as 10-15 degrees cooler out on the water so even if it's beautifully warm on-shore, it can get cool when you reach the open sea.
