One of many bike trails around the nation that have been established on the site of former railroad tracks, the Cape Cod Rail Trail is a pleasant, easy and mostly shaded path for bikers and pedestrians stretching 22 miles from Dennis to Wellfleet. Along the way, it passes through Harwich, Brewster, Orleans and Eastham, within easy distance of scenic attractions like Salt Pond Visitors Center, as well as beaches and plenty of food options. There are also several bike shops along the route at which you can rent a bike for up to 3 days if you don't have your own. Nickerson State Park, located at approximately the midpoint of the trail, is an excellent place to camp and then bike in either direction. The trail also connects with Old Colony Rail Trail, a shorter but more challenging route that takes you to the colorful town of Chatham and the beach at historic Chatham Lighthouse.

      If you go:
The address given is actually the address of Barbara's Bike Shop, which sits next to the parking lot for the Dennis trailhead. Barbara's is a good place to rent a bike for your outing, particularly since they operate another shop at the midpoint in Brewster. Free parking at the trailheads and some locations along the route. Other lots charge a nominal fee.
