• Mammoth Site - Hot Springs, South Dakota

A prehistoric spring that was actually a sink hole developed at this location. The spring attracted many of the animals in the area. The steep sloping sides prevented mammoths from climbing back out and they died there. Eventually the spring dried up and the ground hardened. Today, there is a building built over the ancient site where scientists and paleontologists work to carefully uncover the hundreds of skeletal remains. Guided and self-guided tours provide a wonderful history of these huge beasts, and you can watch the careful excavation in progress.

      If you go:
Fee attraction. Plan on at least two hours to explore the site. This is near the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore and several national parks, but it is a unique experience worth seeing.
