• Oregon Trail Interpretive Center - Baker City, Oregon

A superb, life-size diorama featuring pioneer families, wagons, livestock and wildlife provides the focal point for this 23,000 sq.ft centre, and the exhibition area is no less impressive, with photographs, videos and artifacts telling the story of westward migration. Staff in period costume provide regular living history programs, and there are more than four miles interpretive trails including a 2.5 mile loop that takes you to actual ruts carved by pioneer wagons.

      If you go:
If the 2.5 mile trail down into the valley is too much (as it might well be in the summer heat), trail ruts are also accessible from a turnout on Highway 86, about half a mile west of the entrance to the center. The centre is open 9.00-6.00 daily throughout the summer. Fall/Spring hours are 9.00-4.00 daily. Winter 9.00-4.00 Thurs-Sun.
