Fort Clark opened as a military installation in 1852 and was home to various units, including, most famously, the Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts, until it was deactivated in 1946. Today it is a private recreation community with hotel rooms in the old barracks plus RV park and camping facilities. The historic district of the fort remains much as it was when first built in the 1870s; the Guardhouse Museum is a must if you want to learn more.

      If you go:
Allow some time to enjoy the huge swimming pool created from Las Moras Spring; open to residents, vacationers and day visitors alike, it remains at a constant 68 degrees all year round.
