Great Salt Lake is the largest remnant of ancient Bonneville Lake left in the Great Basin and the largest lake west of the Mississippi. It is famously one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth with salinity levels anything from 4-8x greater than the oceans: three great rivers feed the lake but the only outlet is via evaporation.

      If you go:
There is a visitor centre at the GSL State Marina and this is a great place to enjoy views over the lake. It's also where many choose to launch or rent boats. Nearby Antelope Island State Park is popular for wildlife and bird watching, and also the best place for swimming and sunbathing.
