• International Pancake Day - Liberal, Kansas

Perhaps best known for Dorothy's House, Liberal is also host to International Pancake Day. Held every Shrove Tuesday since 1950, this event was inspired by a 1445 incident in Olney, England, in which a housewife who was behind schedule ran to church while carrying her griddle and pancakes. The highlight of the annual festival is a competitive 415 yard race between women of Olney and women of Liberal, with each side monitoring the results of the other. There are also other events including children's competitions and pancake eating and flipping contests.

      If you go:
The festival is held in all kinds of weather. If you can't make it for Pancake Day itself, you can make arrangements to tour the Pancake Day Hall Of Fame to view photos and videos of past events as well as items given to Liberal by the city of Olney.
