Just 9 miles long, this unpaved, one-way road gains 3,238 feet as it climbs to Fall River Pass, making it one of the most interesting and scenic drives in the National Park system. It first opened as a road in 1920 but had been a traditional Native American route over the mountains for hundreds of years, Along the way you'll negotiate tight switchbacks, bumpy conditions and sections with steep drops and no barriers, but take it nice and slow and it's a wonderful drive you'll never forget.

      If you go:
Pick up the guide booklet before you set off there are numerous points of interest along the way. Speed limit for much of the drive is 25 mph; long vehicles (over 25 feet) and trailers are prohibited.

It should be noted that this is a one-way drive.
