• The Astoria Column - Astoria, Oregon

On Coxcomb Hill, the highest point in the city of Astoria, is a 125 foot tall column 600 feet above sea level. It has a hand-painted 500 foot spiral frieze that depicts Oregon history. Inside are stairs to take you to the observation deck, where you can see most of the peninsula below, the coast range, ship traffic on Young's Bay and the Pacific ocean at the mouth of the Columbia River. This climb is worth the effort and the column is itself a marvel.

      If you go:
It can be quite windy and cool on the deck, so take a jacket. The column is closed for climbing on high wind days, so call ahead.
