• Hackberry General Store - Hackberry, Arizona

Anywhere else, this collection of gas pumps, rusting trucks, vintage signs and rickety buildings might be seen as an eyesore, but this dusty old store and gas station - first opened in 1934 - is shrine to all things Route 66. The building laid empty from 1978 until 1992 when it was re-opened and reinvigorated by Bob Waldmire, famed for his hand-drawn maps of Route 66 (and whose VW camper provided the inspiration for the movie Cars character Fillmore), and has become a must-stop destination along this part of the highway.

      If you go:
It no longer sells gas - or even the general goods it once provided - but now serves as a museum, tourist information centre and souvenir store. Waldmire sold the business to John and Kerry Pritchard in 1998, and they are still there today.
