• Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar - New Orleans, Louisiana

      Roadtrip Attraction
To say that this bar is a place of myth and legend would be something of an understatement. Built between 1722 and 1732, it is (reputedly) the oldest building to be used as a bar in the US. It is (thought to have been) the home of 18th century pirate Jean Lafitte. And today it is famous for remaining electricity free (although this clearly isn't the case - they simply use candles rather than lights). Despite all this, it is a cool place to enjoy a drink at the quieter end of Bourbon Street.

      If you go:
Let your eyes adjust to the lack of modern lighting, order a beer (or Lafitte's famous frozen drink, Purple Voodoo) and enjoy the laid-back sounds of the man on the piano.
