• Laura Plantation and Br'er Rabbit Cabins - Vacherie, Louisiana

      Roadtrip Attraction
Two things make the Laura Plantation stand out from the many other antebellum homes that compete for the visitor's dollar in this part of Louisiana. The first is the styling - in particular the brightly coloured paintwork - of the Big House, clearly marking it as Creole. The second is the restored slave cabin in which the ancient west-African tales of Compair Lapin, better known in English as Br'er Rabbit, were recorded.

      If you go:
It's not the cheapest visit - particularly if you're taking in the equally expensive Oak Alley Plantation virtually next door - but the 70 minute tour of the house, gardens and cabins is superb. Tours run throughout the day from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
