• Pie in the Sky Cafe - Bishop, California

      Roadtrip Attraction
2013 will mark the 35th year that Sue King has been creating fresh pies every day during the summer months at the Rock Creek Lake Resort. On the busiest days, Sue and her staff cook 45 pies in addition to some great mountain chilli and other delectables. The cafe closes for the winter on the second Monday of October. Sue's pies are legendary and just about every local along the eastern Sierra Nevada range makes a pilgrimage to visit at least once. The photo is of one her astounding Mudd pies. I'd drive a couple hundred extra miles for another slice. The cafe is at 10,000 feet and so you'll have ample opportunity to work up an appetite.

      If you go:
The resort also has cabins and an eclectic gift store. One of the best picnic spots can be found directly across the road. Follow the USFS road to the Rock Creek Lake Campground and go to the end of the road. Most of the parking spaces are for tent campers, but there are a few for picnic and day-users. Beautiful view of the lake and convenient picnic tables.
