• Sturgis Motorcycle Rally - Sturgis, South Dakota

      Roadtrip Attraction
Every year, on the first full week of August, up to half a million bikers converge on the small South Dakota town of Sturgis for one of the world's largest - and certainly most famous - motorcycle rallies. First held in 1938, two years after the formation of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club, it began as a race involving just 9 participants. Today the event sees concerts, organised rides and host of other activities aimed at everyone from hardcore bikers to families.

      If you go:
You can take in the atmosphere any time of year: there's a museum and hall of fame, and the winding roads of the surrounding Black Hills make for a wonderful ride (or drive).
