• W.C. Handy Birthplace, Museum and Library - Florence, Alabama

      Roadtrip Attraction
The Father of the Blues, William Christopher Handy, was born in 1873 in this log cabin, which has been expanded to house the extensive collection of effects (including sheet music and instruments) he left the city after his death. You can actually play the piano on which he allegedly composed such songs as 'The St. Louis Blues.' and 'The Memphis Blues'. Admission is extremely low (currently 2 dollars for adults).

      If you go:
The museum hosts a Handy birthday celebration every November 16th, and the City of Florence has a Handy festival during the summer. In the heart of town there is an impressive statue of the musical icon.
