• Escalante/Hole-in-the-Rock Heritage Center - Escalante, Utah

      Roadtrip Attraction
The story of the Hole-in-the-Rock expedition is one of the most extraordinary tales of Mormon pioneer spirit and determination, a planned 6-week journey that turned into a grueling 6 month challenge requiring the party to blast a road down a 1000 foot high canyon (the Hole-in-the-Rock). Their achievement is now marked by this heritage center. The first phase, completed in 2011, saw the construction of an information center complete with educational panels, murals and restrooms; more facilities will be added over the coming years.

      If you go:
It's possible to retrace the footsteps of those early pioneers by driving the 62-mile (each way) Hole-in-the-Rock Road. Some parts are rough, requiring four-wheel drive. Allow a full day and check with the Interagency Visitor Center in Escalante for latest road conditions.
